Protect You And Your Baby Before and During Pregnancy
Folate which is a Vitamin B supplement is very important to have in your diet especially if you are planning on getting pregnant or are already pregnant. This rich nutrient helps prevent certain birth defects like abnormal spinal cord or brain defect. If you are planning on having a baby it is vital to eat foods rich in this supplement, you can get better results with the nutrient all ready running through your circulation.

A Study was done on 3,600 mothers and those who consumed 400 micrograms of folic acid from supplements and foods are 60 percent less likely to put their child at risk of having birth defects. Taking Vitamin B during and before you are pregnant reduces the chances of your child having defects by 50 to 70 percent. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention pregnant women should get at least 600 micrograms of Folate daily.
Foods that are rich in Folate are lima beans, dark leafy vegetables, flour, pasta and rice. A cup of spinach contains 210 micrograms of this nutrient that’s more than half of the daily value for non pregnant women. J. David Erickson, DDS, PhD, an epidemiologist with the National Center of Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Center for Disease Control, says that it is very important that women take folic acid before pregnancy if planning on getting pregnant because birth defects can occur within the first few weeks of the pregnancy. It is very crucial for women of all childbearing age.
When cooking foods that have Vitamin B make sure not to boil or over cook them. If you over cook them it can destroy up to 90 percent of the Folate. You can eat them raw or gently cook them in a microwave.
Multi-Vitamins are also good at preventing birth defects like heart, brain, spinal, urinary tract defects and limb malformations; Dr. Erickson says that women who take multi-vitamins can stop 5,600 birth defects from happening. If you want to add a vitamin supplement consult your doctor to see if it will benefit you more in any way. Women who prefer not to take Folate supplements can get this nutrient from eating cereals that contain 100 percent of the daily value.
Alcohol is very dangerous when you are pregnant. You should not drink alcohol at all while carrying. If you drink your baby can develop alcohol fetal syndrome which causes facial and brain abnormalities according to the US Surgeon General. So, it is best to abstain from alcohol if you are considering getting pregnant or are already.
