Breast cancer as we know is very powerful and deadly. It has affected many woman and some men all over the world and that is why it is important to know something about it because you never know, it might knock on your door and walk in without you even acknowledging it.
What You Should Know:
- More than 240,000 women and 1,000 men, will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. in 2010
- More than 40,000 woman and 400 men die each year from the disease.
- There are more than 2 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
- One person is diagnosed every 3 minutes and one person dies of breast cancer approximately 14 minutes.
People over the age of 50 account for 76% of breast cancer cases; while only 5% of breast cancer diagnoses are in people under the age of 40 and 18% are in their 40s.
Nearly 1 out of 5 breast cancers diagnosed will be HER2-positive breast cancer, a form that tends to grow and spread more aggressively than other breast cancer.
Symptoms of Breast Cancer
When breast cancer develops there may be no symptoms at all. You should get to know your body and if you see any changes in your body you should consult your doctor right away.
- Lumps in breast/underarm area, nipple discharge or tenderness
- Visual change, including:
- Size of the breast, swelling
- Inverted nipple
- Pitting or scaling of the breast skin
There is a 97% 5-year survival rate when breast cancer is caught before it spreads to other parts of the body. Consult your doctor and ask about what age should you start a mammography. If there is a history of breast cancer in your family go to your doctor for regular screenings and testing.
